Those who are familiar with Julia Cameron’s Artist Way will immediately understand the notion of Donkey Days. They are assigned play time, excursions which enable us to explore something of interest. Unlike Artist Dates they do not have to be solo! You can have a Donkey Day with a like minded companion. Participants of Travels With a Donkey may, for example, head off in a ‘Donkey Caravan’.
A Donkey Day does need not be overtly “artistic” — think mischief more than mastery. Donkey Days fire up the imagination. They spark whimsy. They encourage play. Since creativity is about the play of ideas, Donkey Days feed our creative work by replenishing our inner well with images and inspiration. When choosing a Donkey Day it is good to ask yourself, “what sounds fun?” — and then allow yourself to try it.
